Project 1: Flexible Manifesto

This body of work investigates the concept of “Layer” as both a visual strategy and a methodological framework. Beginning with a translation of Photoshop’s digital layer logic into a physical system using tracing paper, the experiments first explored how rules, variables, and chance operations can generate layered outcomes.

The Unconscious Reality

This poster shows one visual outcome of The System of Cuts. Using images and lyrics from One Direction, I followed a set of fixed rules and variables to respond critically to explore how a process of cutting both physically and emotionally might reconstruct meaning.

Every cut is a cut of separation - from a song, a memory or identity. The pieces have been rearranged to create a new of composition where the fragments may retain traces of their original form but change in context. The result is an abstract visual rhythm - part destruction, part reconstruction - to uncover how design may mean to transform absence in to form.

The quote is from Farewell My Concubine,an iconic Chinese queer
film that portrays the lifelong bond between two Peking Opera
actors, where art and identity blur into forbidden love. Set against
the backdrop of war and political turmoil, their devotion is tested by
jealousy, betrayal, and societal repression. It is both a story of queer
desire and a tragic reflection of history’s cruelty. Two men loved,
but the world tore them apart. Life is cruel, yet truth cannot be
denied. In the end, only by oneself can one find completion, and
even in sorrow, love leaves behind its light.

I began my coding process on P5 by focusing on the concept: I wanted to turn my manifesto quote “life is like an ice cream, enjoy it before it melts” into a playful, visual system. Ice cream is colourful, temporary, and fun—so I wanted my code to reflect that same feeling through sprinkles, a cone, and a scoop that carries the text.I started with a configuration section where I defined the key variables: the quote, background color, font, sprinkle count, and two “flavor” variations (strawberry and mint). This allowed me to control the whole design with a few parameters instead of rewriting code later.I generated a pastel backdrop filled with sprinkles. Using randomness for position, size, angle, and color gave the background an organic, scattered feel—similar to how real sprinkles fall onto ice cream.
I built the cone using many horizontal lines that gradually shift color, giving a shaded, gradient look. To emphasize the waffle texture, I added crosshatch lines. This step was about making the base of the ice cream visually believable while still stylized.
The scoop rim was designed with overlapping translucent ellipses and “bumps,” which made the edge look fluffy and irregular, like melting ice cream. This added depth and softness to balance the hard geometry of the cone.
The most important part was wrapping the manifesto text around the scoop. I split the sentence into individual characters, calculated their circular positions, and rotated each one upright. This made the text feel like it was part of the scoop itself rather than just sitting on top.To bring the design alive, I programmed:
Drips: characters on the bottom arc occasionally drip, simulating melting. I tied this to frameCount so it changes over time.
Gloss and sparkle: each letter was given a highlight ellipse and a rare random sparkle, imitating the shiny, sticky surface of ice cream.
These dynamic effects emphasized the manifesto’s idea of impermanence.

The code I designed randomly distributes both the title text and the star patterns each time the page is refreshed. It also ensures that each word remains fully visible within the canvas. Additionally, the background color changes randomly with each refresh. Since the poem explores opposing themes such as "reproduction" and "death," and "abundance" and "famine," I contrasted the chaotic placement of the title with the structured layout of the poem to reflect this tension.

Installation: Exploration of connection, fragility, and transformation. At the center of the is a cardboard heart, a symbol of life and pulse, through which red thread flows. Below the heart the thread forms tangled roots that carry the weight of chaos and confusion. As it passes upward through the heart, the thread begins to unravel and branch out into clarity, reaching toward fragments that represent moments from the poem and from nature. These elements become extensions of the heart’s rhythm, each connected by the same red thread.
