Project Description

My data is the animal response numbers from “Urban Park Ranger Animal Condition Response”. This dataset contains information about requests for animal assistance, relocation, or rescue completed by the Urban Park Rangers in New York City from 2018 to 2024. I used coding to help me organize and extract the top 20 reported animal species, then drew circles of different sizes based on their quantities (Chart 1). Next, I enlarged the footprints of each species to match the size of the corresponding circle (Chart 2), representing the diversity of species reported in New York City parks and their report frequencies. In addition, I used coding to create a Pot Plot chart to visualize the quantities (Chart 3), where each dot represents ten reports, with a rounded number applied to simplify the chart. By sorting the animal species and number from the requests for animal assistance, it reveals a part of the world of New York City's animal residents. I want to use these data visualizations to show that New York City is not only a city for people. There are abundant animals that coexist with us. Through this project, I ❤️ NY animals. I hope to help people discover and know more about the ecosystem in this city. For physical presentation, I used risography printing and hand-carved stamps to present my database visualization. I really liked the point made in my class that behind every data point lies a living entity. Therefore, I wanted to express animals more vibrantly through the form of handcrafted-edged objects. The stamps also provide opportunities for audiences to participate and guess the animals.
