Project Description
This piece visualizes data from the Food Allergy Facts and Statistics for the U.S. (updated April 18, 2024) using clay to represent the most common food allergens. The data shows the number of Americans affected by each allergen, ranging from shellfish (8.4 million) to sesame (0.7 million). I translated these statistics into a playful, sculptural “burger” , ”fish” and “egg” made from colorful clay. Each ingredient layer represents a different allergen, and the colors are inspired by the original data chart, maintaining a bright and visual connection between information and form. By reshaping a scientific dataset into something tactile and familiar, the “Allergy Burger” invites viewers to reflect on how food — something we all share — can also symbolize serious health challenges for millions. It transforms abstract numbers into a physical, relatable, and even ironic form: a burger that many people cannot safely eat.
