Project Description

Using p5.js and its 3D WebGL capabilities, I created a 3D sound sculpture generator. The software picks up microphone input and generates stacking 3D circles, which grow in size and distort based on the volume of the sound picked up during a time interval. The default setting is a new circle generated every 5 seconds, but the rate of this can be edited by the user. The louder the audio, the larger and more distorted the circle form will be. I wanted something that captured time in a visible format, and I felt 3D was a good format since each point in time has numerous perspectives and variances, even within a single person's memory. I wanted something neatly segmented, hence the standard thickness of each circle, yet also highly variable, which is represented in the varying diameters and shapes of each form depending on the audio. Time passes at a steady rate, but the things and the feelings that occur in each uniform minute or hour can vary wildly.
