Project Description

City in Motion is a light-based installation that translates patterns of movement and density within New York City into a fleeting visual experience. Drawing from urban data such as transit flow, human concentration, sound, and environmental conditions, the project reduces complex systems into minimal lines, pulses, and moments of illumination. Rather than presenting data as information to be read, the installation treats it as something to be felt. Light appears briefly, travels across space, and disappears—mirroring the constant motion of the city itself. Viewers encounter the work in passing, much like a train arriving or a crowd shifting, emphasizing impermanence over permanence. By stripping the city down to abstract signals and rhythms, City in Motion invites reflection on how urban life is shaped by invisible systems that operate continuously around us, often unnoticed. The installation exists as a quiet interruption within the subway environment, revealing the city not as a fixed map, but as a living, moving network.
