Project Description

Drawing With Time is a digital tapestry that maps a single moment, an image of time itself. The site collects one minute of sensory information from the device at its center: images taken at ten second intervals, ambient microphone levels, mouse movements or the tilt of a phone, the location, the quiet static and drift of the machine. These strands of data are woven into a composite image, a fabric of light and motion. What emerges is not a photograph but a woven record of duration, carrying the colors, textures, and movements of the moment in which it was made. The project grew out of earlier work about mapping the celestial and the unseen systems around us and their tangible touch points. Visually it draws on long exposures and artists who use duration as material. I wanted to create a digital analogue, an exposure made of information. Using only the sensors of my seven year old laptop and the gravity and orientation of an iPhone, the project gathers what the machine already perceives. It becomes a portrait of surveillance and presence, revealing how data becomes a tapestry, a woven field of information and the traces we leave inside the machines we use to see the world.

Credits

I got inspiration from many photographers known for doing long exposures. My entire class and my professor were helpful and collaborative in the project, with their ideas and input helping me to develop it. I used AI throughout the project, including Gemini, Gemini command line, and Chat GPT. I noted in the code that the project was made in collaboration with AI, although I did not specify the models I used. I used the P5 library and tutorials a lot.
